A Sensory-Based Reading Experience for Special Needs Kids!

My students need a different multi-sensory experience to learn to read. By using sand in tubs to write letters and words, my students will be able to have a differentiated sensory experience that reinforces learning read.

My Students

I teach some of the highest-needs students who have difficulties with emotional regulation. Our school is in a low-income area, with all of the students receiving free lunch. My students are some of the toughest students to teach in my school, yet they are also the most rewarding students to teach. I have been highly successful at integrating and supporting these students into the general education classroom to the highest extent possible. Our school culture is committed to supporting the inclusion of these students in the general education setting.

My Project

My students need a differentiated approach to learn to read. This means thinking outside the academic box and into the sandbox! By providing a different way to present sounds, letters, and words, my students will be more engaged in their learning.

By using sand to have students write letters and words, students will view reading and writing as a fun and engaging opportunity.

Rather than always relying on traditional pen and paper to teach writing, using sand allows students to have more fun while viewing reading as a time to play with words, rather than work. By providing a different way to learn to read and write, my students will have a more engaging opportunity to learn.
