My Project

Hi! Thanks for stopping by! I am currently a teacher in Alexandria, Virginia. My first year of teaching, I was a fourth grade teacher and I will now be teaching second grade in my second year (feels a little bit like fate, right?) Our school is diverse, serving a diverse community with plenty of needs.

Throughout my first year, I realized how important and influential it was for students to see the classroom as a second home- a place where they could unequivocally be themselves and be loved for it.

In turn, I learned that when students feel comfortable, confident, and seen- they preform, they show up, and they try even a little bit harder. As I move to second grade, I knew I wanted to continue on my journey to make this classroom not only accessible to all my students, but as calm and comforting as possible. I chose each item to ensure the classroom environment they will be in provides a place for us to gather together (rugs/carpets, especially for social-emotional learning lessons, class meetings, and for read-alouds!) comfort (beanbags), organization skills (chair pockets, calendars, book displays for our class library, and schedules), fun and enthusiastic bulletin boards (all board wraps and posters encouraging reading), and a class library (bookshelves at the appropriate height for these students). As a teacher, my job is to love students loudly, and I choose to do this through the physical act but also through ensuring that this classroom is a place they want to come to each and every day.
