Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher who loves to make sure my kids are always prepared for their day. My students love to learn and always try their best to stay focused during the day. As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as typical. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and strive to give them the best of me.
My Project
I am hoping to create a safe and fun environment for my students. This past year I was able to create a safe space in my classroom called the Cozy Corner. It was a place that a student could go and relax or decompress for a few moments.
We all need a break and space sometimes, it would be great to have a comfortable place to send them, the cozy chair and pillow would be great.
Along with our cozy corner we also have a kidney table, the stools would be the perfect height for my new first and second grade students. At our table it would be a great time for small group instruction and or group learning to occur.
Lastly, the small rug would provide some fun, if we were to play hopscotch in the classroom. More importantly it would provide a place for a student to go if they are in need of some sensory supports. Research shows that rugs are great tools for sensory learning, kids can write numbers and letters in the rug with their fingers providing a multi sensory approach.
