This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Thank you for taking the time to read about this project! Please help me acquire a new table and chairs for the speech and language therapy room that will allow my students to have equal access to materials and stimuli.
A small table and chairs will allow my smallest students to sit in a manner that will maximize their ability to access materials, engage meaningfully, and collaborate with peers.
A study found that the physical environment can influence the way teachers and students feel, think, and behave. This new table will help to address several of Steele's functions which are incredibly important for teaching and learning in classes. These functions include pleasure, task instrumentality, and social contact. Further information on these three functions is listed below:
Pleasure: Some educational studies demonstrate that an aesthetically pleasing environment can influence behavior: attractive classrooms have a positive effect on attendance and feeling of group cohesion (Horowitz and Otto 1973) and on participation in class discussions (Sommer and Olson 1980).
Task instrumentality: This function describes the ways in which the environment helps us to carry out the tasks we want to accomplish.
Social contact: The arrangements of furniture to promote social contact or give space for individual work.
