This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from an urban community in California. Seventy-five receive free or reduced price lunch. We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools, which has made it a bit difficult and has forced us to use our creativity to teach. I have a diverse group of energetic first graders this year. They range from a few high performing to majority of low performing students. Yet, I am determined to provide students with meaningful learning experiences where they can acquire life long skills to be successful individuals.

My Project

Due to the lack of curriculum and supplies, it has been hard trying to bring science to the classroom. It's a great feat to gather materials before each lesson.

Oftentimes, I am limited to textbooks and videos.

Although students are excited about science, my students will benefit greatly from hands-on experiments, books and realia.

My students are first graders. They have short attention spans but the minute they touch and explore, their eyes light up and they become vacuums for knowledge. They want to know more, they want to know why, they want to know how. Isn't that the beauty of what science is about?!
