My Project
Now, more than ever, scientific literacy is essential for our student's future success. It is important for them to differentiate between facts and opinions and reach their own informed conclusions going forward. Many of my students struggle with reading to begin with, and a large portion speak English as a second language, which makes academic texts challenging. Understanding scientific texts is especially useful because they touch on so many aspects of literacy: facts, evidence, opinions, bias, visuals, data, arguments, real-world connections, and more. They also allow for a bridge between academic and conversational language, which is incredibly important for my student population.
My goal with establishing a classroom science library is to foster both a love of science and a love of reading in my students.
Providing them with books on a variety of topics at various reading levels gives them a chance to investigate all the “what if” questions that come up during a lesson. It also helps build confidence in students who say, “Science is too hard”. The background knowledge they can gain on a topic can do wonders for a student’s self-esteem and willingness to participate. Reading can be done independently, in a small group, or with the whole class. Some of the best class discussions, and even hands-on investigations, have arisen from something a student has read and shared with the class.
I hope to expand the number of titles every year, with student input as the driving factor in selecting the books. Many of the titles I am requesting were suggested by my students. I also am including some novels, works of fiction, and general middle school interest titles. Even if they aren’t reading about science, at least they are reading!
