A SCHOOL OF FISH

We need a canister filter, under gravel filter, air pumps/hoses, water heater, water testing kit, and start up chemicals to get our classroom's 95 gallon aquarium up and running.

About My Students

This school year I have a 95 gallon fish tank which was donated to my classroom. When the tank arrived in my classroom I purposely did not talk about it a lot with my students. I was waiting for someone to approach me with an interest in setting it up and running the maintenance. I really wanted this to become a student led endeavor.

Within a few weeks one of my awesome 7th graders, Allison came to me during class wondering if we could do something with the fish tank. As a result of this conversation, a group called "Fishie Flex" was formed including Sydni, Abbey, Riley, Haley, Grace, Nick, Kate, and Gracie. The group quickly decided that they would have regular meetings to get the project off the ground and away they went.

Together they want to research how to set up a fish tank, what materials they need, what fish they can keep, how to maintain the equipment and eventually how they can teach other students about the experience.

Allison, Sydni, Riley, Grace, Gracie, Haley, Kate, Nick, and Abbey will be the lead students in developing this project for the middle school. They will develop their teamwork and leadership skills together through regular meetings during the school day and will gain an understanding of how to pull a group of 7th grade students together in order to efficiently and effectively achieve their goal.

These students are devoting a lot of their time, both in and out of school, researching how to setup and maintain different types of aquatic environments. Along the way they will learn how to collect and analyze data then use this data to understand how aquatic environments behave, and how to adjust conditions to meet the needs of the organisms within the environment.

In Their Own Words

We hope to set up a successful tank, and learn responsibility on our way to care for new organisms. We are proud to have the chance to teach others about the journey we are taking to adopt fish into our classroom. We not only want to set up the tank, but we want to learn along the way.

Every point in this project requires leadership. The group meetings we have require a lot of leadership to keep our group on one topic the whole time. We will all make the most of this because it is a strength that we can gain in order to run more efficiently. Another opportunity we can learn from is when we set up our tank. We can learn how to all work together, and lead each other into doing our best and having the best outcome for our aquatic environment.

This project is important to our school because everyone will learn from it. My group members and I have been hard at work researching everything about fish, plants, and tanks that we need to know. We are planning on sharing our knowledge with our classmates. They will be able to learn things that they might not have an opportunity to hear often. The challenge our project will solve is there are fish in the world that haven't found their sea yet. We want to make a safe and happy world for the fish that will be with us in Mr. Santoro's room. This tank that was donated to us is the perfect place to start!
