A Sanctuary for Students

My Students

I love our school community because our student population is so diverse. They come from many different backgrounds, but because they are all here as a Blue Blazes family, learning and interacting, they go out into the world better at being resilient, more accepting and caring for others.

The whole staff works diligently to make our students' school days a time where they can feel safe and valued; where they are challenged to dream of a future where they may achieve their goals and make good lives for themselves.

We have an ever-growing, immigrant population and a large low socio-economic population; we have students who have experienced trauma or who have never really had a consistent home life. These are the reasons why I feel so honored to be a part of this staff--I do feel I make a difference every day I come to work.

My Project

We have been working hard to bring change to our outdated work space in our Student Services area. We can't do much about the layout, but we have had it painted and have scavenged unused furniture for our busy waiting area. We have added plants and relaxing and positive decor, a science class built us a living wall.

Students feel comfortable coming to our office when upset or anxious and the waiting area is a busy place but the furniture is old and some pieces are starting to come apart.

I would love to have a more welcoming, safe place to wait or refocus.
