A Safe Space to Learn: Promoting a Calm Classroom

My Project

In our school, we serve a diverse group of learners, including students with autism, ADHD, and sensory processing challenges. Many of these students are sensory seekers—children who crave additional sensory input in order to self-regulate, focus, and participate meaningfully in classroom activities. Without appropriate sensory supports, these students may exhibit behaviors such as fidgeting, restlessness, emotional outbursts, or withdrawal, which hinder both their learning and that of their peers.

Traditional classroom environments can be overwhelming or under-stimulating, depending on a student’s sensory profile.

I am working on trying to provide targeted sensory supports which will reduce these barriers and improve educational outcomes. The bubble lamp is a visual sensory tool that offers calming motion, gentle lighting, and a soothing visual focus. This will be placed in a designated calming corner, offering a safe retreat for students who need to de-escalate or self-soothe. The hand-held fidgets are small, quiet, tactile tools that allow students to self-regulate during instruction without disrupting others. Fidgets can improve focus, reduce anxiety, and serve as non-verbal coping mechanisms. Finally, the weighted Pillow provides deep pressure input, which is known to have a calming, grounding effect on the nervous system. The pillow can be used on a lap or shoulders to help students remain seated, attentive, and calm during learning activities. Thank you in advance for your support!
