I have the privilege of teaching 18 amazing students this year. I am a forest kindergarten teacher. I have a classroom inside the building of our school and a classroom outdoors with no walls or ceiling. My students have the privilege of spending half of their instructional time learning in the outdoor classroom. Nature is the teacher in the woods and students' imaginations, creativity and discoveries guide their learning. Kindergarten students are so inquisitive, creative, and diverse. Kindergarten is a whole new world to 4 and 5 year olds. They all learn at different rates and in different ways. They all have different learning abilities and styles. Each child shines in their own unique way.
Forest kindergarten students not only learn from nature but are also exposed to the technology that they may not have in their homes.
New iPads were purchased for our class this year to be used to practice math and reading skills. Students can also take those to the forest to take pictures and videos of what they are discovering in the woods. We are integrating the technology into the outdoor to expand our learning of nature and the world we live in.
Classroom iPads are placed around the room after use by the teacher to charge for the next day. They are being place on top of bookshelf and desk to get recharged. This is just not a convenient or safe way to store this expensive technology around small children. We are always afraid that our more rambunctious students will knock them off and break them. There is also a chance of liquids getting spilled on the iPads that are charging in the outlet near the sink.
Having a charging cart to store the classroom iPads in will provide a better way to keep our technology safe and insure they are ready to use.
We will be able to have student become responsible for their iPads by placing them in the storage cart instead of teacher taking them up and finding available outlets to charge them. iPad will be ready each day for indoor or outdoor learning by placing them in one central location.
