My special needs students need a "safe place" in the classroom where they can distress and restart their day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Fair isn't everybody getting the same thing.. Fair is everybody getting what they need in order to be successful"
Working with the special needs population, this quote is often used. We want to give our scholars the opportunity to succeed as much as their peers.
We all have those days were we want to just be left alone... and for some reason, everything and everyone around us does bothers us...Don't you wish you were able to just leave the room or area and regroup?
Wouldn't that put you in a much better mood?
Sometimes special needs students need this more often. Creating a "safe place" in the classroom where the students can go and regroup, would benefit the whole classroom community. It would give the student an opportunity to reflect, "restart" their day, and have a space to call their own.
My Project
The materials requested would be used in the following way:
1. Carpet will be used to distinctively show where in the classroom the "safe place" will be.
2. Bean bag chairs will give the "safe place" a cozy feel. It also gives the students an opportunity to sit in a different kind of chair, allowing the students to feel safe and comfortable and able to return to their desk later, ready to work.
3.Sand timers will be used to give the student a time limit they may need to "restart" their day; sand timers can also be soothing watching the sand slowly fall and collect on the bottom.
4. Putty will be used for students to "de-stress".
5. Sensory balls can be used as a preventive. When the teacher sees a student in "stress", the teacher can simply give the student the sensory ball at their desk to squeeze, allowing them to not focus on their anxiety, but the lesson being taught.
6. Play-Doh can also be used to de-stress by squeezing the dough or playing scenarios.
This project will benefit the students in the classroom because with the safe place in the classroom, less instructional time is lost.
This "safe place" can also be used as a classroom incentive.
