Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an amazing group of 28 first graders in a Los Angeles school in a high need community. Most of my students come from low income families and are English Language Learners. Despite their circumstances outside of campus, they come to school everyday excited to learn and grow as scholars.
We are on a mission to give every child the education they deserve, no matter their backgrounds and lives at home.
This is my second year teaching and I love the opportunity I have to change lives for these wonderful children. They deserve nothing less than the best learning opportunities and I am determined to provide them with just that. We need your help to make this dream come true!
My Project
First grade is really a turning point in a child's reading life. Not only do they grow SIX reading levels in first grade (the most out of any grade!) but for many of them, this is the time when they really start to love being readers! Right now my students get to choose books from our classroom library every week and become experts at reading those books. They each have a cardboard box to keep their books in, but as you can imagine, these boxes don't last long!
It is so important to have a safe place for the children to keep the books they have chosen to read!
Their cardboard book bins are falling apart and we are only a few months into the year. I want the children to feel good about grabbing their book bin at any point during the day, and unfortunately right now they are worried about touching the boxes since they are no longer holding together well. Tape can only go so far when dealing with first graders excited energy! This is why I am asking for plastic book bins that will last not only for my class this year, but also for students in the years to come. I want them to understand not only the importance of loving books, but also how to take care of them and having these bins will bring them closer to that understanding.
I am also asking for more glue sticks - we can never have enough! We use glue for art projects, phonics assignments, and much more. And lastly, I am asking for large chart paper with guided lines so that we can do more shared writing and I can model how to write the best we can!
