Goal: Make recess as much fun as class time!
I have the most fantastic class of enthusiastic first graders this year. In spite of the challenges many of them face at home, they are highly motivated to learn. They adapted to our class rules and procedures so quickly that we are able to relax and have lots of fun while learning.
Unfortunately, with our school district and state budgets suffering deficits, money is not readily available for such supplies as playground equipment.
My playground duty experience has taught me how much more safe and fun recesses are for students who have enough equipment to keep them occupied. It cuts down on conflicts, and puts students in a brighter mood for the class time that follows. Teachers are greeted after recess with a quiet, receptive line rather than a hostile one, with numerous hands raised to complain about problems that would not have occurred if those children had had something to do. These students will often carry their bad moods into the following classroom period, preventing lessons from flowing smoothly.
To prevent my beautiful class from heading for a descent into the "idle recess syndrome", I am requesting a supply of playground equipment. All we need is several utility balls, jump ropes, hoops, and activity scarves. (Actually, we would probably use the scarves for P.E. only due to the need for more supervision.)
