A Safe & Cozy Spot for Our Newcomer Kindergarteners

Help me give my students a cozy classroom rug to create a safe, welcoming space where newcomer kindergarteners—many living in poverty can learn, feel comfortable, and build a sense of community.

My Project

I teach kindergarten at a newcomer school in the heart of the city, where nearly all of our students come from immigrant or refugee backgrounds. Over 90% of our families live below the poverty line, and for many of my students, this is not only their first year in school—it's their first time in a U.S. classroom.

As a first-year teacher, I’m working hard to build a classroom that feels like a second home: warm, welcoming, and safe.

I want my students to feel excited and comfortable when they walk through our door each morning. One simple but powerful way to do that is with a new classroom rug.

Right now, we don’t have a designated rug for group time, and it’s a real challenge. A colorful, soft rug will give my students a place to come together for morning meetings, story time, and learning activities. It will help them build community, practice social skills, and simply feel grounded.

For kids who are navigating so much change in their young lives, having a safe, cozy place to sit and learn means more than you can imagine. Your support will help make our classroom feel like home—and give these incredible students the welcoming start they truly deserve.
