Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All of my students have struggled to succeed in traditional high schools. Many of my students are gang-affiliated, young parents, struggling with their own or their family members’ mental health, or suffering from poverty with 87.76% qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch. In addition, over 80% have been or currently are classified as English learners. However, these are not the things that I see every day.

I see students who are overcoming serious obstacles, who are making efforts to learn and to grow in spite of overwhelming odds, and who are caring about each other and helping each other.

I see students feeling a sense of accomplishment when they succeed in understanding something they have struggled with for years, and I see their parents light up with pride when I tell them of their child’s success. Because of our smaller alternative setting, I am able to build relationships with these students in ways that are often difficult in a traditional setting. I am dedicated to creating educational experiences which will help them succeed in high school, college, career, citizenship, and life.

My Project

Students need a safe and happy learning environment. The portable, standing whiteboards will be a fresh new collaborative learning space in my room. Because they are reversible, they will serve twice as many students. The air filter will keep my air safe in our old school building.

The new standing collaboration stations and air purifiers will give students a safe and engaging classroom.

We want the students to be able to wash their hands without leaving the class and disrupting their collaborations. I know these additions to my room will be appreciated and used every day!
