A Rum-Pum-Pum-Pum! Let the Children Drum!

Help me give my students a class set of frame drums so all the students can engage in brain-based, child-centered music making following the world-renowned Orff Schulwerk approach to musical development.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Shade's classroom raised $987

My Project

From Pre-K to 5th grade and our inclusion classrooms, every child receives a minimum of 45 minutes music instruction every week even though our school and district is consistently underfunded. Our school truly values the arts as essential to personal growth, building a sense of community and teamwork, and academic achievement of our children.

From a very young age, the students in my school display a love and affinity for rhythm--including our students with disabilities--but we need the equipment for the entire class to participate in fulfilling drumming activities!

The magic of frame drums for children is that the work begins with things children naturally do: saying nursery rhymes, rhythmic text from literature, and their own words and phrases from a prompt--every student can participate, even if they have only one word or a very simple rhythm to contribute.

They then speak those phrases onto the drum they hold in one hand, playing the rhythm of the words with their free hand. It's so simple, so effective, and so much fun! This kind of work increases their ELA and language development.

After that, students are able to connect the simple rhythms they played to the notes we call "rhythmic bricks." Through focus on the rhythmic elements, students are activating their logic and mathematical brain development.

The frame drum is small, allowing for movement at the same time. They learn to collaborate in small groups to create their movement, and perform for one another. Students are developing their executive functioning skills like planning and organization, and social-emotional skills like teamwork, trust and perseverance. The entire brain and body of a child is engaged in these music-making activities.
