A Rug Really Rules!

My students need an area rug for many, many, classroom activities on the floor.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

We are a Room full of Rockin' Readers, and we Really need this Rug! I teach a class of second and third graders at a wonderful but low-income school.

I've just started using the workshop model in my teaching, and it is fantastic. My kids are engaged in their lessons and really learning! However, a major component of workshop is floor time, for mini-lessons, for sharing their work with each other, for class meetings and more. The problem is that not only is our floor very hard, it can be very difficult to get kids to sit all in the same space without a clearly defined area (and tape on the floor does not work). Floor time is so important for kids at this age, but without boundaries it can turn into nothing but a management mess!

We need this amazing area rug! With the rug, not only will the floor be a little more padded for them, but there are clearly defined areas for sitting (either in a color stripe or around the edge for a ready-made circle time). I have watched other teachers use this exact rug, and I have been amazed at how a little thing like the rug can cut way down on management problems. Kids need tactile and visual reminders of where to stay once they pick a spot, and I'm particularly excited to have kids sit around the edge of the rug and eliminate all the confusion of trying to make a circle.

Your help will make our floor time lessons SO much easier, and much more worthwhile. Our floor time management problems will decrease and time for lessons and learning will increase. A little thing like an area rug may not seem like a lot, but it is amazing how much of a real difference it will make to my students!
