My Students
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds, but in our classroom, everyone is equal. The rate of poverty in my district is the highest in the area; the majority of students in our schools receive free or reduced-price lunch.
Our city in southern Maine is a former mill town, where many businesses and jobs have come and gone.
Despite the economic struggles often felt by parents here, students come to school positive and excited about the future that school can bring to them.
My Project
Restorative circles help students process thoughts and feelings so that they may be better able to be present and learn in class. Our restorative circle is a safe and supportive space for students to work through social and academic challenges.
This rug will be used as a tool for students to become more comfortable and engaged in our restorative practices.
Sitting in a circle encourages students to be fully present for the academic instruction they receive, as well as to be calm and focused on their learning objectives.
We have employed restorative circles in the math environment and our goal is to apply these practices in other areas across the curriculum; the only obstacle is having a comfortable place for students to be seated.
