Chicago has a river running through it; the Great Lakes hold 20% of the world's fresh water, yet my kids have no idea about what all this means. I would like my students to understand their environment, how important it is to preserve it, and how fascinating it can be. With a classroom river system we can study such an environment in detail and over time. Although a field trip can be scheduled occasionally to a local river, it would not offer in depth knowledge. I teach a split class of 32 students in fourth and fifth grades. I teach science, math, language arts and social studies. This project could be used to teach every subject in creative and interesting ways. My students come from a neighborhood where many families live in public housing and a couple in homeless shelters. Such a project would make school very exciting and meaningful. This is the biggest grant I have asked for so far.....we need a River Tank System and an accessory pack. I will buy the fish, lizards, and plants once it is set up. Such materials and associated projects would entertain the kids so much they would be learning before they even realized. I grew up fishing, catching and raising frogs, turtles and fish. My students, practically surrounded by water, are not privileged to experience life in such a manner. These materials would allow them this experience.
