A Return to Normalcy

Help me give my students a rug to play on to replace the one lost in the fire, lego bricks to incorporate into lessons and earned indoor free time also lost in the fire.

My Project

The reason for requesting these items are an effort to rebuild a lost area of my classroom due to our recent tragedy. My students had a large area in the room as well as a 2x8 foot Lego building table. We used them to connect to language arts curriculum about our community and how things are made. We use them to connect to community jobs and to extend learning. I used them for math extensions with printed templates where students had to build the item pictured and count the different bricks used or building challenges using a set number of bricks. I also used them as a reward at the end of the week.

On Friday afternoons, students who completed their weekly class work were able to have Fun Friday.

By the third week having access to the Lego area, almost every student finishes class work on time! The majority of my students would play and build with friends at the Lego table or rug. I had enough lego bricks for 20 students to use at the same time and wish to eventually reach that level again. This is just a beginning in a long road ahead to replacing so much that was lost. I plan on rebuilding my table using resources from Home Depot once I have a more permanent classroom space.

My students work hard each week and really look forward to having free time to explore and create new things, or to connect with their peers through interactive play. This is a project that will make my students feel appreciated and special to be part of my Ohana.
