Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 180 students with similar backgrounds coming from low-income families. I took on this job as a Culinary Instructor to make a difference to give back to the youth. I have currently 18 copies of an old Cooking Text Book (too advanced for my high school).
My classes are an average of 30 students per class.
There are no workbooks or internet access for the textbooks or workbooks. It is difficult to cover chapters, assign class work, or do open-book tests with only 18 tattered copies. I have placed a request for new textbooks, but my request was not granted due to the priority of the CORE subjects.
I am seeking a classroom set of Text Books 35, with web access, and teachers resources. With web access, I can assign a code to multiple students so they can do their work at home, on the computer or phone.
My students come into class ready and eager to learn cooking and all that goes with it ( except the cleaning part :). I want to be able to assign reading, vocabulary, and projects to them, it is difficult without proper resources.
My Project
The textbooks will transform the learning experience into something modern, access through the internet. The students will no longer have to wait to share books during classwork assignments or open book test which causes a lot of noise. The workbook alone will save paper, by not having to request copies of everything I am trying to teach.
The textbook that I have chosen is at the high school and Career and Technical Education( CTE)Level, well written, well illustrated, shows procedures of sanitation, and easy to follow recipes.
Hopefully, one day we can spark enough interest in Culinary Arts to become a Magnet program.
