This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will fund the materials for students to complete an engaging, hands-on probability project in our Algebra 2 class.
This project started when one of my students described how cool it would be to use cooking in math class!
This project will assess multiple Algebra 2 Probability Standards including:
-Creating a sample space
-Calculating single event probabilities, complements, and compound probabilities
-Experimental Probability vs. Theoretical Probability
-Expected Value
Students will start by using their problem solving skills! They will be given a few probabilities of getting an item from the trail mix (ie, the probability of getting a raisin, and the probability of getting a raisin OR an M&M), and will work together to solve the puzzle of the missing probabilities. This will lead students to the amount ingredients required to make a very small serving of their chosen trail mix. They will then need to scale the probabilities to create a recipe big enough to feed their whole group! Once the trail mix is made, students will use it to run trials, calculating experimental probabilities along the way.
Finally, students will answer questions about compound events, odds of an event, and the difference between theoretical and experimental probability.
