it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I've just been given an 'Intensive Reading' class of twenty 6th grade students. Most read on a 3rd or 4th grade level. They need motivation - some lively, interesting reading materials. That's why I'd like to get the kids yearly subscriptions to 'Scholastic News' and 'Time For Kids'.
I love my new class.
They are great kids, with wonderful personalities. They are a little behind in reading, but I can tell from talking with them that this is because they haven't read much for pleasure. They view reading (and writing) as a chore. Well if we know the problem, we know the solution, don't we? I've started reading short poems and stories to them, and they are starting to take more interest in reading. But they have to read by themselves. It would be very useful to have some short, colorful, well-illustrated reading passages that they found relevant and interesting.
My Project
Which, of course, is where 'Scholastic News' and 'Time for Kids' come in. These magazines are super stimulating (remember 'Weekly Reader'?), on just the right reading level, and also have quizzes and activities that we can use in class. I plan to base half our lessons around these magazines.
Would you please help me to get these kids reading?
Let's give them some materials that will really grab their attention and get them talking. I think that these magazines will do just the trick!
