Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year, in seventh grade, students will be studying the works of such authors as Sandra Cisneros, José Martí, Rigoberta Menchú, and Margarita Engle. This is a group of mostly native Spanish speakers who are acquiring literacy skills in both English and Spanish as they prepare for high school.

Research shows that students best acquire reading abilities first in their mother tongue and then in other languages.

This is why I am working to build a diverse Spanish-language library that is appropriate for middle-school students.

Flex reading time will serve as a "sponge activity" for students who have extra time, and we will incentivize students to read for pleasure in addition to their required reading for class. Only by developing literacy skills in Spanish will our Spanish-speaking students be able to transfer those skills to English and become bilingual, biliterate leaders in the future.
