Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 21 wonderful smiling, friendly faces greet me every day! My students are hungry for knowledge, and they are very eager to learn. I teach for the largest school district in Oklahoma.

My school is high-poverty and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.

They love to talk, share, and are very social. They like to learn in a way that is meaningful and fun for them. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and have never had a positive interaction with reading. Despite the poverty, they work hard and are constantly trying to learn more and more. They are great and always appreciate anything that is given to them to help them learn.

My Project

Mo Willems is my classroom's favorite author! His texts are simple yet so powerful! It is fun to read these stories to my students and see the excitement on their faces while predicting what silly thing Gerald or Piggie will do next. In addition to the Elephant and Piggie series, we are also asking for the Pigeon books. The sassy pigeon cannot be controlled, and my students can't get enough of him!

Having access to familiar texts will help my students' confidence in reading.

Unfortunately, our school library is very limited in the amount of Mo Willems text available. These books would make a difference in my students' learning. They truly enjoy these books, and I enjoy laughing at the silly stories and voices. I would absolutely love your help in order to make this accessible for my students!
