Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one", Macolm Forbes. My students are a wonderful group of caring individuals. We spend our days learning, celebrating the successes of each other and supporting each other when the learning gets tough.
The students in my classroom come from a variety of backgrounds.
Seven students speak English as a second language. Many of my students' families are low income and their parents often work odd hours to make ends meet. While the students have many cultural and economic backgrounds, they all get along and embrace each other despite their differences.
My Project
We will use this set of books as an end of the year project. They will complete a variety of activities to build comprehension skills as well as social skills through the use of the book, "Number the Stars". Not only will this help improve my students' reading skills, this book provides a child friendly introduction to life during World War II and the Holocaust. As part of our social studies curriculum we learn about the impact of the war on the state during that time, this book allows a more personal understanding of life during WWII.
This project will bring a valuable resource into the classroom.
It will allow my students to participate in the end of the year reading activity. It will enhance their reading and writing skills through the varied learning activities that will be used while reading this story. It will also help them learn empathy and become more caring and understanding citizens in a world of diversity.
