Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students struggle with listening comprehension. Being a vital skill for future success, listening comprehension is integrated into all lessons throughout the day. I want students to have opportunities to listen to books on tape to increase their experiences and opportunities for success.

My students come from a low income neighborhood in New York.

Most students at my school receive free transportation and lunch. The struggles their families face affect their focus and motivation in school. I want my students to have all the opportunities possible to grow and succeed. Reading outside of school is encouraged by the school but many families do not have the time and resources to help them. In my classroom, I created a rich library, with a variety of genres and authors but my students deserve more. They need a classroom that makes them feel safe and supported in their education. As special education students, many struggle with reading and listening comprehension. These challenges greatly effect their motivation. Creating an environment with multiple opportunities for success will enrich them in ways they have never dreamed.

My Project

Imagine a student who has not been read to by a parent every night before bed. Imagine a student whose only opportunities to listen to a read-aloud is in class with one teacher. The students of today need to have an infinite number of reading and listening experiences. A CD player will allow students to listen to books on tape and hear the voices of different readers. This will allow them to practice their listening comprehension skills and build fluency. Imagine a child who visualizes reading memories as sitting in a classroom chair, anxious and uncomfortable. Help me create a warm and inviting reading corner with bean bag chairs for students to experience the real feeling of being 'lost in a book'.

Listening comprehension and positive reading and listening experiences are vital for my students success.

I want to give them what they are not receiving at home. I want to give them a real change to grow and succeed. Help me make a difference. Let's be the reason that these students will grow and gain positive experiences.
