A Reader Today A Leader Tomorrow

My Students

My amazing students are part of a rural class community. A community located in the heart of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. A community of good people who are trying to make ends meet with what little bit they have. A community that was directly effected by the loss of coal mining jobs. A community where kids are supported and loved.

Myself, my school, any my community know the future is inside my classroom.

My hardworking and dedicated students strive for excellence each and every day. They come from diverse backgrounds and about 85% of my students come from poverty. However, this does not keep them from coming each day to gain knowledge to help better their future. My students know they are so very loved and know inside my classroom is safe place for learning.

My Project

I am requesting highlighters, Post-It notes, pencils, erasers, and small plastic containers to help increase reading comprehension inside my classroom. These materials will allow my students to dive deeper into reading. The close reading activities with the material will give students accountability for their own learning.

The materials will help my students excel in reading.

They will be able to use the Post-It notes to write down questions they may have about the text or important information they have found. Each color represents a different strategy. For example, green will represent any questions the student may have and pink represents the part that surprised the student. This will lead to an increase in critical thinking skills as well. They will be able to highlight important material in the text and key words in the questions. The pencils and erasers will be a huge help because 85% of my students do not have the material needed for class each day. The plastic containers will allow each student to have material available at their desk. This will help decrease the amount of instructional time lost. I want each of my students to have access to every thing they need in order to be successful. Funding of this project will help all of my students to be able to dive deeper into our reading material. This is important to me because I want my students to become better readers because they are the leaders of tomorrow.
