My Students

My classroom is an organized chaos that provides a sense of comfort and calm before the storm (state exams). When my students walk through those doors it becomes their home and we begin the journey to help them achieve the goals we have set as a unit to accomplish by the end of the year.

I wouldn't use the "normal" teaching adjectives to describe my students because they are anything but "normal." My students are an incredibly driven and motivated bunch that face disadvantages on a daily basis.

With a 98 percent population at or below the poverty line it is a constant struggle to keep them reminded that an education is the key to helping them achieve a successful future despite their outside environments telling them otherwise. Despite being faced with constant adversity they take in stride how far they have come while being fully aware how far they have to go. While they may not feel privileged very often, they take notice when given opportunities. What the school lacks in funds is not a reflection of the amount of work they put into their students and the school environment. They are very much a part of the culture that runs through our walls and deserve to always have someone fighting in their corner.

My Project

My students will be covering a curriculum arc directly related to the American Dream from the 20s- to the 60s. In doing so they will begin with The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men and finish off the year with A Raisin in The Sun. This will provide them with a literary connection that will not only enable them to make text to self connections but will also provide them with textual evidence and information to use on their state exams at the end of the year. With various settings and perspectives the students will be able to connect all three novels with literary elements that are strongly assessed on both the Common Core and NYS State standard Regents exam. In being able to cover several standards during a confusing transition period into the common core these novels would assist in "killing two birds with one stone". These materials will help provide clarity for the students and more opportunity to do well on their state exams.

My project will make a difference because it provides literature that the students can connect with on various levels as well as give them more information and knowledge on a topic that can assist them on their state exams in both ELA as well as US History.

With the inquiry and differentiation that will be used they will have hope in achieving success with understanding a whole new set of time periods that are relate-able and that will be crucial information in their future endeavors.
