As an occupational therapist, I work with kids who need a little extra help to learn things like forming letters, cutting with scissors, and other fine motor skills. Multi-sensory activities that let kids hold, manipulate, and build letters in three dimensions are known to lead to better learning outcomes.
Colorful, hands-on activities that let kids be kids are a bright spot in their school day.
My student's eyes light up when they see that I have an art project laid out for them, or a fun new tool to use to practice their letters. The materials I have chosen include:
- A Boogie Board tablet that makes repetitive practice of letters fun
- Magnetic letters to create letter and word games
- Letter beads for kids to make wearable art with their names
- Stickers, pompoms, and chenille stems to make letter art
- Purple glue sticks for kids who are still learning to use glue
- adaptive and safety scissors for little hands learning to cut safely
- rock crayons and dot markers that make coloring fun for reluctant artists
With these supplies, I will be able to create customized activities for each unique learner I work with, like alphabet matching with stickers, using magnet letters or beads to spell words before writing them on the Boogie Board, and art projects that allow them to express their creativity, while ending up with a project they can take home and show off to their families.
