I teach in a Title I school that is located in a rural area of our state. Over 80% percent of the students in our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
I am the librarian at our school, and my classes consist of 436 energetic students who are eager to gain knowledge through reading.
My students crave hands-on activities and I love providing them with many engaging experiences that allow them to make real-world connections with what they have read in class.
My Project
I want my students to become life-long readers. We have an Accelerated Reader program at our school that I would like to use to help promote more independent reading. The A.R. program is designed to measure the comprehension level of a student as he or she reads a book at their grade-equivalent level of reading. After my students read a book, they are allowed to acquire points for completing assessments associated with the book they have read. I would like to reward my students for meeting their Accelerated Reader goals when they pass their assessment with a certain percent of accuracy with a popcorn party. This incentive will promote and encourage my students to read more; therefore, building their comprehension skills and vocabulary.
The Weaver Popcorn Kits, the candy pieces, and the lights will all be used to stock and decorate our popcorn station incentive that will be used to reward my students for meeting their goals with the Accelerated Reader program.
