Our center is a 5 star Step Up to Quality center. Our Head Start program provides early educational experiences for children at or below the poverty level. The children may come from low-income backgrounds, but they are rich with the love of their families and teachers. Our center goes above and beyond to build a strong bond between the child and their families. We not only teach the child, but we also empower the families. In doing so, we see growth, not only in the child, but in the family as well. Our children are learning how to better our future.
My Project
My classroom lacks a true quiet, safe place for children to turn to when they aren't feeling their best emotionally (e.g. angry, sad, homesick, etc.). In the past school years, my class has had a lot of students who would have benefited from such a space.
When we are too emotionally overwhelmed, making decisions can be difficult to impossible.
When we take time to make ourselves feel better, we can make better decisions throughout the day. Due to the backgrounds of a lot of my students, they don't see positive modeling nor learn good coping mechanisms for dealing with their negative emotions. The quiet area will not be associated with anything negative, such as time-outs. It will be a place that children can intuitively, voluntarily go to when they need to work out their emotions and latch onto healthy coping mechanisms and habits, without disturbing the rest of the class.
Things like fidget toys for anxiety, cuddlies, envelopes to write letters to their parents when they are homesick, paper/whiteboards to draw pictures, soft and comforting objects, books, etc. will be useful to creating this peaceful space for the children and the teachers.
