My Project

Sometimes, there is a student who is not interested in singing, not interested in dancing. But when you put an instrument in their hand, they connect with music in a way they never have before and it changes them. They develop a greater appreciation for the beauty of music and they develop a new perspective in life that they may not have obtained any other way. In elementary general music, every 3rd grade student begins playing the recorder. Another part of the curriculum is teaching students about harmony. Singing, and playing recorders, however, focuses mainly on creating melodies.

At our school, we don’t have the method or the means to provide students with deep, meaningful ways to understand and create harmony.

Ukuleles are simple, the chords and harmonies are a lot easier to play on a ukulele than on a guitar, they are small enough for little elementary school hands, they’re fun, but most importantly, they provide the students with a way to create complex harmonies and chord patterns that they don’t have the opportunity to otherwise. They can learn about how harmony in music adds another layer of richness to the sound in a fun, engaging way—which also makes them unique.

I have a vision of the 3rd and 4th grade students playing a melody on their recorder while being accompanied by some of their classmates on the ukulele, and it only gets better from there. We can have 5th and 6th grade ensemble groups where some students are playing the bucket drums, some are playing the piano or the recorder, while another group is playing the ukulele. The possibilities, the joy these students can feel from these experiences, and the belief in themselves that they can be great creators, are endless.
