My students need a classroom set of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief so they can expand their reading skills and tie-in Greek mythology in a fun and exciting way.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am always looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Many of my students cannot find books that are interesting to them because of monetary means or lack of opportunity.
I want my students to be inspired to become lifelong readers but in order for them to do that they need the opportunity to gain literature knowledge of different types of genres.
My Project
Since my students do not have the financial needs of purchasing books and they also lack the opportunity to explore different types of books. I recently read, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, as a request from one of my former students.
I fell in love with the vivid imagery, fast pace action, and the wonderful tie-in of Greek mythology and now my students will be able to have the chance to fall in love with this book.
I have many activities planned with this book as a tie-in to Greek mythology such as the students creating their own Greek demi-god using Greek roots and their describing the powers. Additionally, I would like to have a "Day of Olympus", where the students will be able to show off some skits for their parents based on the book. Furthermore, I would like to incorporate dioramas, character letters, art projects and math problems when we are reading this book.
