This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.
-John Dewey
This above quote is something I think of daily as I walk into work. I work in a Title 1 school in the north of Orlando. My school serves some of the neediest children in our city. We have a population of students coming from low income backgrounds with some big needs. The majority of our students are minorities and about 19% of them are ELL and 16% are ESE. These statistics presents some significant challenges in meeting the needs of everyone.
My students are the youngest in this school. I work with 4 and 5 year olds in the VPK classroom. My students come to me already behind their peers. Research tells us that low income children go into kindergarten with a 30 million word deficit from their high income peers. This means that from the very beginning my kiddos face an uphill battle for school readiness. We work hard on building early literacy and math skills that will give them a boost towards success in the later grades.
My Project
Puzzles are a staple of a an early childhood classroom. They provide so many different opportunities layered on top of each other. They address social skills and co-operative learning strategies. With those skills comes communication and vocabulary practice. Puzzles use fine motor skills and spatial awareness in order to effectively solve them. Finally puzzles teach perseverance as very few students are able to solve something on the first try.
In my classroom puzzles are a daily activity.
My students love to be able to sit down with a friend or a teacher and do a puzzle together. Currently we have very few puzzles. I have spent most of the year going to different thrift stores in an attempt to make our small stock of puzzles grow. These donations would provide puzzles that are engaging and challenging enough for my students.
