This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine life today without technology? Well, my students are forced to learn without proper technology in an inner city school serving low socioeconomic students. The only access to technology they have is an overhead and a desktop computer they have to crowd around to vaguely see and hear.
My students are an eager bunch of second graders who struggle academically due to a lack of support at home.
Most do not even have books in their homes to read. Even with these struggles, my students come to school wanting to learn and try their best. They have minimal if any help at home with homework and learning so the majority of the academic knowledge they acquire is in the school building during the hours they are present. They have to work twice as hard as students in surrounding schools due to the disadvantage they have from lacking prior experiences, early literacy instruction, and exposure to information and nonfiction texts.
The school my students attend is an inner city school serving 750 students where 80% receive free and reduced lunch due. I teach a combination of students from different classes, so I come in contact with at least 55 students each school year.
My Project
The projector I am requesting will open tremendous opportunities for my students everyday in every subject. For example, last week we studied the story, Corduroy. Instead of just hearing me read the book and partner reading the book, the students would be able to watch the story online and be able to learn about bears through a video online which would increase their knowledge by exposing them to technology and nonfiction information. This resource will aid in improving the overall quality of my students' education. They will no longer be held back by having to visually see things crowded on top of each other trying to see a small computer screen. Students would be able to comfortably take part in learning through technology at their own desk with their own journals for notetaking (which would increase their writing skills as well). Learning would be more visual and therefore more interesting.
Please, please consider supporting this project!
My students desperately need to be exposed to 21st century technology in order to compete in this ever-changing world. This resource would help them tremendously by exposing them to videos, music, images and so much more. It will aid in the learning process and increase overall knowledge to promote their self-esteem. They do without so much in their personal lives (food, clean clothes, houses to come home to), help them learn more at school.
