My school is a public charter school in one of the lowest performing urban districts in the nation. We are striving to make "safe harbor" this school year. The majority of my students receive free and reduced lunch because their families often do not have the resources to meet daily needs. We focus on inclusion teaching, and many of my students require special education services. However, I am the only math teacher to the entire middle school, and my ability to create differentiated paper resources for my students is limited.
We have almost no technology in the building! The most interactive tool in our classroom is the set of white boards that I fashioned from sliding computer paper into sheet protector sleeves. I recently sought professional development in a suburban setting, and became vividly aware of the progress that my students would be making if I could give them technological resources. Robert Marzano's research about technology in the classroom clearly demonstrates its possible impact on student learning. My students want to learn, but they need something to engage them. They deserve the same quality of education as any other students in this nation!
I cannot wait to see how many different projects we can do with an LCD projector in our classroom. I imagine that, at first, I will be creating PowerPoint presentations and finding online resources and video clips to facilitate learning in our classroom. But my hope is that soon my students will begin creating presentations and finding resources to share with one another. One of my 7th grade sections is beginning a project on Game Theory, Prisoner's Dilemma, the economics of choice, data collection, and statistics. I would love for them to collaborate on a presentation of their research and findings that they could give to the entire school at an assembly.
It is imperative that today's students engage with technology in the classroom. By no fault of their own, my students are going down with a failing system that has not supplied them with the opportunities to excel. This piece of technology gives my students an opportunity to experience, to grow, and to get one step closer to "making it".
