I am a social emotional learning intervention specialist in a Title One (low income), trauma-based school. My students are clever, kind, inspired, and resilient. They have big plans for their futures and are working hard academically to be the best students they can be.
Recently, our school has begun implementing some new curriculum and structures in order to help students with their social-emotional skills and their ability to self regulate, as we have noticed that this is an area where our students need a little extra instruction.
Luckily, our district created my current position and in my capacity as a specialist, I am creating a proactive space where I will work with students to build their SEL skills/knowledge.
In this room, I will be working both one on one with students and in small groups. Although I will be putting extra focus on students with behavior struggles, I will be working with all students in our building in one capacity or another!
This project hopes to accumulate essential items to create the most effective space for this purpose. A Zen garden, a meditation pillow, mindfulness activities, fidgets, healthy snacks, a pulse oximeter, etc. are all meant to provide a calming space where students can work on their self awareness and regulation skills, in the hopes of reducing negative behaviors that impact their ability to be successful students.
