This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from across the globe and face enormous challenges. We are a high poverty school and my students come from many backgrounds. Many are English learners and speak Spanish, Korean, Bengali, Tagalog, Russian, and more as their first language.
My students are a bright, motivated, and incredibly diverse group of middle school students.
I am inspired by their hard work and dedication to learning. In the face of challenges, they are resilient.
As a teacher, I want to inspire my students to persevere as they navigate growing up in Los Angeles during a pandemic. So far this year, we have been distance learning. Every day, I teach English language arts to 7th graders, French to 8th graders. I also meet each day with my advisory students for to focus on their social and emotional health.
My Project
Daily, I read literature with students behind a screen. I act out French phrases in front of a camera. I promote mindfulness and other strategies to stressed out students daily in advisory. We learn together, have gotten to know one another, and find ways to have fun, despite these unique challenges. I am finding creative ways to connect with students in all of my classes that I've never had to do in my 14 years of teaching.
Distance learning has given us new challenges we've never faced before now.
My laptop overheats, the screen has frozen during class, and my students have told me that there was no sound. The importance of having technology work seamlessly has become clear. It is a necessity. I am realizing the need for dependable devices. This model of MacBook Pro will allow me to run multiple programs at the same time during class and not lose any class time with technical issues.
