Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our classroom printer is nine years old. As you can imagine, it is at retirement age. It has let us down so many times that we have just stopped using it. A new black and white printer would allow my students to print their writing assignments.

My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.

Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them, but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles and other educational toys at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title I school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantage, but not enough to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper. Thus, new printers have been deemed "non-essential."

My Project

My students are just beginning to learn to write. My hope is that they leave kindergarten writing a minimum of three sentences. Once they are able to write sentences, they will begin to see themselves as authors and begin to write short stories. I would like for my students to use the computer to type and illustrate some of their stories. Once this is done, I would like for my students to print their stories so that they can share them with their classmates and family. To print their stories, we must have a working printer! In addition to printing their stories, I would like for my students to use the printer to print the certificates that they earn when they complete a level of their reading program. Even if their certificate is in black and white, I am sure that my students would love to have it.

Having a printer and toner will allow my students to have concrete evidence of their learning.

They will be able to print the stories that they author and their own reading certificates. Being able to do this will further motivate my students to read and write more. It is very powerful for my students to see their writing as they do in published books. They feel like "real" authors.
