I have been teaching fifth grade for over 30 years at a public elementary school that is now 50-years-old. Our students, from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, are bonded by a strong school spirit and desire to learn and explore.
Our classroom does not currently have its own printer. My students walk to another classroom to retrieve their documents from a printer shared by the other fifth grade classrooms. Logistically, this causes lots of backups that impede our progress.
We need a printer with scanning capabilities to allow students the ability to upload documents, photos, and other objects useful in their Inquiry Projects. Every fifth grader at our school engages in the technology-centered “Investigating Change” Inquiry Project, allowing students to explore a topic of their choosing, under the umbrella of the arts and science curricula, and resulting in the development of a presentation through a variety of fun and innovative media.
After an introduction to 21st Century research and presentation skills, students are set free to pose an authentic and researchable question based on personal interest, design a search plan, gather and integrate information, and present a product that applies advanced information/communication skills to a real audience. When their research is complete, students explore different methods for sharing what they learned, using innovative technology to enhance their presentations.
Your donation will provide my students with the printing, copying, and scanning access they need to complete their Inquiry Projects with more efficiency and creativity. With a printer-copier-scanner in our classroom, our class can also save paper by scanning work for the whole class to view interactively on the smart board. Our eco-friendly students will be thrilled.
