Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a fourth-grade teacher in an urban school. Despite many challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn how to learn and drive their own learning.
My students love school because they experience thrilling and motivating educational experiences that simultaneously improve their math, writing, reading, science and social studies skills.
This often takes monetary funding I am not given by my state or school district. Unforgettable experiences in the fourth grade help my students retain learning in their long-term memories.
My Project
So much of what students do in school to learn science is not brain friendly and is, instead, forgettable and boring.
In our classroom, we use longterm research projects, self-published books, and latch hook art rugs to help us create deep understanding of Utah environments.
The USB drives will make storing research and writing pieces, in the making, easy and portable! The color printer ink will help create text features for our informational text that we study in depth as fourth graders. Charts, photographs with captions, glossaries, tables of contents, etc. are all features the students will learn to save on their USB drives and print to create professional looking final drafts. The latch hooks rugs are a year-long project that teaches the students about delayed gratification. Each latch hook rug correlates to a Utah environment theme, and the students become experts about the correlations.
The fourth-graders are the ones busy creating their learning through these projects. I am there as their guide. These tools will make that process more engaging, authentic, and fun.
