Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 2nd grade students attend an inner city school in Los Angeles. They are from various backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Many of our students are English Language Learners (ELL) with roots in Latin America. The neighborhood is currently gentrifying, so we are developing a diverse population with many types of needs.

We are a STEM magnet that caters to unique and motivated students in Los Angeles.

They love to learn and constantly challenge me to meet their unique needs and ignite their passion for learning.

The school is 100 years old and we have multiple generations of students who have attended the school. Although the neighborhood is changing, many of the families remain the same.

My Project

My second grade students have many mental barriers to overcome when they enter my classroom. The biggest challenges for them is learning to read complex words and mathematical computations with larger numbers. Many students struggle with believing that school is too hard and easily give up.

My students need books that introduce a positive growth mindset and a classroom environment that is clean and inviting.

The positive growth mindset books will teach students how others make mistakes and how to persevere. Students will learn that making mistakes will help them learn a new skill. The posters will remind students of how to keep a positive growth mindset. The Roomba vacuum will clean the classroom floors regularly of debris which will create an inviting classroom. A healthy and clean school environment will help enhance student learning.
