Imagine having a paper, but no pencil. A crayon, but nothing to color. A chalkboard, but no chalk. In my classroom we have a magnetic dry erase board, but no magnetic tools to utilize. I work in a school district where most of my students come from a high poverty, low income family. They struggle to receive the basic needs of life. Most of my students come to school in the winter time with no mittens, hats, or scarves to keep their little bodies warm. A majority of them were not fed breakfast nor given a hug, kiss, or an "I love you good-bye". However, the smiles on their faces when they walk into my classroom would lead you to think that they have the best life possible!
Our kindergarten classroom is full of color because of my students, but due to a lack of basic supplies and materials is filled with old, worn down furniture. Until recently, the only dry erase board my classroom had was all scuffed up with tape markings from taping manipulative's so my students could engage in whole-group, hands-on lessons. A dear friend of mine was so kind to donate a used, but magnetic dry erase board this school year to our classroom. However, due to a lack of school funding, we have no magnetic tools to utilize with our new board. In hopes of receiving a donation and to correlate with our theme on acrostic poems, my students and I created a poem to ask you for your assistance with helping us get our hands-on to learn.
H elp us learn to read and spell A nd don't forget math as well. N o more seat work or paper and pencil tests, D onating these learnig manipulative's will help us learn the best. S aying our alphabet, spelling words, counting money, telling time, and adding 2+2, O nly these magnetic tools will teach us what to do. N ecessary way to learn is exploration with our hands, and with your help our experience is sure to be grand!
Your kindness and generosity will ensure that my kindergarten students build a foundation and love for reading, writing, spelling, and math with the use of their hands.
