My students are not a "one size fits all" class. We are made of unique individuals who love to learn but do so in different ways. I work at a Title I school in Douglas, Georgia. We value the type of education that we provide our students by keeping up to date on the most successful teaching practices around. I am proud to work at such a school and would like to continue to provide my students with the best resources in which to learn on a daily basis.
My students work hard and are always eager to learn something new and they learn best when they have the resources to excel in all academic areas.
My class has several non-English speaking students and I feel that ALL students should have access to resources that increase equity and engagement. My students will be able to bridge that gap with the C-Pen reader.
My Project
The ReaderPen is a stand-alone digital pen that is portable and will help my non-English speaking students overcome the barrier of not being able to read and have access to text for a variety of purposes. My students will be able to use this pen to hear words read aloud, access to Collins English Dictionary, use as a digital highlighter, translate between languages, and a dictaphone.
The ReaderPen will allow me to be able to make instruction in my diverse classroom more effective and efficient.
One of the most significant benefits of this technology in my classroom is that it will bring lessons to life and increase engagement by bringing relevance, personalization, collaboration, and connected learning experiences to my students. For my disadvantaged learners, this ReaderPen can be a much-needed bridge to equity. My students will be able to use the pen to complete work independently. It is small enough to be inconspicuous which reduces negative attention and when used with headphones, it will reduce distractions for other students. No matter what text media is presented the ReaderPen would be a tool my students could use for any assignment especially when given assignments that do not have auditory capabilities.
