After 5 years of courses through the Michigan State Universty Urban Educator Cohort Program, it is time to start a classroom of my own! I will be teaching 2nd grade with approximately 26 Chicago Public School students starting in September. I am extremely excited to start the year and want to provide my students with the basic materials to help them succeed.
My school is part of a large urban district.
Despite challenges many of my students face outside the classroom, they always come each day eager to learn and grow together. Please help me supply my students with the necessary materials needed so that each student can flourish and reach their full potential!
One of the most important parts of the day for my pint-sized students is the morning meeting and story time! Think back to when you were in second grade and how important it was to start the day off right with a proper greeting from friends and your teacher. Having a gathering rug and a functional whiteboard for our most important space can give my students this same experience.
Instruction through use of a classroom whiteboard allows the students to have new content modeled for them, the ability to practice new material, and more importantly the students can express themselves.
Think what it would be like to be in a classroom without a whiteboard or chalkboard for the teacher to use!
Time at the classroom rug is some of the most treasured memories many of us have from our own childhood. It gave us the opportunity to leave our desks and come together as a group for powerful learning moments. Providing a cozy space with a rug and whiteboard allows the students to work together in small groups and be comfortable taking an active part in their learning.
Creating a safe space where all are welcome is one of the most important things I can provide for my students. It gives them a chance to grow with confidence in these formative years.
