My students need this novel to read together as we discuss ways in which the sharing of feelings should be done in a safe and accepted space. Middle school students need to know their feelings are valid.

My Students

My students are all gifted in reading. But, this does not always equate to higher achievement. Studies have shown that this happens because gifted readers cannot relate to the novels chosen for them and because they cannot see how the novel affects their lives.

Relevance and Empathy; Two missing pieces of many curriculums for our gifted readers.

My students long for these two things. I have students telling me that most of the books they have to read have nothing to do with their lives outside of school. My students also engage highly when they see how the learning will make them a better person/citizen. I am hoping this project will give them both.

My Project

Students will use the novel Harbor Me to inspire their sharing of feelings on a daily basis. This sharing will take many forms such as journaling, drawing, singing, dancing, creating songs, creating skits, writing poetry, and photography.

Students need a safe harbor in which they can share feelings without judgment.

This novel, Harbor Me, and connecting projects will allow them to find such a place in their classroom. We will collaborate with other students, teachers, parents and community members as needed. It takes more than a village to help our children grow. And this growth will be sparked by this project. This is why we need these books.
