Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are active first graders, in a high-need community. They have developed into independent learners and are constantly on the move from table to table and activity to activity. We have developed independent center activities in order to better help students in a small group setting. The way that the students have adapted to the process has exceeded our expectations; they are becoming responsible for their own learning!
Currently, our students use a variety of tables to do their work. We have kidney tables, to better guide our small group instruction and various long tables to access the curriculum on their own. It has become increasingly uncomfortable for them as they grow to sit at the tables in tiny chairs. We have to make do with the materials we have in the class; this includes 12 chairs that are too small for them to reach the tables.
We have limited resources. There is not enough money in our budget to buy new chairs, but I know that the students will greatly benefit from having chairs that help them reach the tables. This will make it easier for the students to write, read, perform experiments and continue to be creative.
