My students need a classroom carpet that designates a space for each child during floor time so personal space can be easily defined and respected.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my class are aged 5-6, very energetic and eager to learn, but easily distracted. They are ACTIVE learners, for sure! Out of the 28 students, 8 are English language learners, most of whom speak only Spanish at home. The community in which we live is very diverse and generally low income. Nearly 100% of the students in our school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many come from single-parent homes. They come from many different backgrounds and enter into kindergarten at all levels of experience.
The students in my class are encouraged to explore new ideas, learn new vocabulary and concepts, and communicate their feelings and thoughts.
We spend a lot of time on social skills and strategies needed in order to fit in and get along. The beliefs and ideals that guide us as individuals and community are that we will be "safe, respectful, and responsible" citizens who respect and care for each other.
My Project
The carpet will be used every day, and often during the day, as students sit on the floor and listen to the teacher read books aloud, teach new lessons, talk about the day. It will help with grouping the children into color groups or teams, create a more friendly environment, and aid in classroom management.
The squares on the carpet will define each child's specific place on the floor and help the children learn about respect for others' personal space.
It will also help with the wandering of a few students during floor time, those who slowly yet steadily creep away outside of the area where we are listening, learning, playing, singing, or watching videos. The carpet clearly lets the children know where they are to sit during floor-time activities.
This will be my third year teaching kindergarten. The first two years taught me that we really need this in our classroom!
