My students need a classroom library containing fiction and non-fiction books at a variety of reading levels to meet their needs, as well as a comfortable rug to sit on.
Imagine the joy of a young student who is coming to a brand new school. The students are so excited you can see the sparkle in their eyes. They are ready to learn, however, the book shelves in the classrooms are empty, especially for a teacher like me who has changed to a new grade level.
The majority of the students at my Title 1 school are from low socio-economic backgrounds and are English Language Learners.
Many do not have books to read at home, and school is the place they depend on to improve their literacy skills. As a brand new school, and as a teacher who is new to the grade level, our supply of books is very small. These students are among the most needy in our community, and deserve a classroom rich in reading materials to inspire them to read daily, at school and at home.
My Project
I am trying to build a quality classroom library filled with a variety of fiction and non-fiction books at a variety of reading levels to meet my students' needs, from students who are reading below grade level to those who need a challenge. With enough books, I could start a lending library where students could borrow books to read at home. These books would change the students' lives for the better as the doors to learning to love reading will open for them. With the right books at their reading levels, they will be successful readers and will begin to develop a life long love of reading. Additionally, we spend a great amount of time on the floor with our learning and reading activities. A nice rug would make the students much more comfortable during this time. With second graders, having a rug with square sections will help them know where to sit during carpet time.
There is no limit to what this project can do for my students.
How can one measure learning to love reading? Those sparkles in my students' eyes will light up the world with the right books in their hands. They will have what they need to learn and grow as readers, at school and at home. Donating to this project will touch my students' lives and have an impact on their education for years to come.
